Building Online Chinese Learning Community Inside and Outside the Classroom
Topic Area: Pandemic Pivot
Presented By: Xuefei Hao
Abstract:
During the pandemic, students have been facing many challenges including but not limited to health, financial, academic, and emotional issues, which often results in poor attitudes, low motivation, and corresponding weak grades. In this presentation, I will discuss several efficient ways to stimulate students’ language interest and increase their engagement and motivation based on my Chinese language courses’ practices from March 2020 to 2021 spring semester. Through building a Chinese learning community inside and outside the classroom, students can use the target language in practical communication and feel connected and supported.

Let's Hear It From Our Students: An Analysis of the OER Feedback Survey
Topic Area: Student Success
Presented by: Regina Gong, Jason Almerigi
Abstract:
The MSU Libraries' OER Program is a student success initiative that was launched in the Fall 2019 semester. The OER program goals are affordability, access, agency, innovation, and engagement in innovative pedagogical models that facilitate learning. This presentation will provide an overview of the OER program, including the courses using an OER as course learning materials. It will also present survey results and course success metrics disaggregated by relevant demographic background factors from over 8,000 students enrolled in Fall 2020 courses that adopted OER learning materials. We will discuss how the cost of textbooks has impacted our students' lives and how OER has provided them the means to address the affordability and accessibility of learning materials, especially during the pandemic.

Words Matter! What type of language helps learners?
Main take-aways: Do not speak too slowly. Watch your intonation so that you sound authoritative. Use informal and friendly language (I, you, we) and stay away from academic language. Don't use machine-read audio. Use your own examples and let your personality come through. Create a connection with your learners. References:Moreno, R., & Mayer, R. E. (2000). Fostering Positive Culture in an Online Academic Community
Topic Area: Pandemic Pivot
Presented by: Ryan Thompson, Andrew Dennis, Valeta Wensloff
Abstract:
When MSU’s campus activity closed due to COVID-19, units and departments across campus sought solutions to transition to remote learning and maintain student engagement. The game development program in the Department of Media and Information turned to a familiar source; a video game communication platform called Discord. While we were already using Discord for casual links and outside of class communication, the quarantine put our server into overdrive. Now, our community Discord is a thriving community spanning 30 classes, 10 faculty, and over 800 members. It is helping game developers of all stripes learn, share, and communicate in a screen dominated era, and keeping faculty, students, and alumni connected and collaborating.
Join three Media & Information faculty as they discuss their experience building, fostering, growing, and maintaining this online community consisting of hundreds of game and interaction design students on Discord. By involving alumni and forthright peers, they found a natural balance between professionalism and creative expression.
