Hello again everyone! Marohang and I look forward to you joining us for the kick-off meeting of out learning community for AY2023-2024 tomorrow morning, 10 to 11am (East Lansing Time) Friday, September 22, 2023. We'll revisit the primary aims behind our community and see where the conversation takes us although we are very interested in a more conscious effort to bring Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) pedagogy into the conversation this year, examine how a digital-collaborative approach to teaching and learning can democratize the creation and sharing of knowledge, and explore how the advent of generative artificial intelligence (AI) might have a positive role to play in our work with 21st century students. We hope you can join us!

Out ahead of today's 1pm workshop on Generative AI in the context of IAH courses, here is a freshly posted discussion of how teachers can use ChatGPT from the folks at The New EdTech Classroon:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i4HJZzwt3lY

If that piques you interest, the Center for Integrative Studies in the Arts and Humanities (CISAH) invites you to a workshop on how we can plan ahead in a productive way for the challenges and possibilities presented by generative artificial intelligence (AI). The session will provide concrete guidance for incorporating AI in pedagogically sound ways into our courses. Please bring an existing syllabus or assignment that you would like to modify during the session. Scott Schopieray and Caitlin Kirby of the Enhanced Digital Learning Initiative here at MSU will lead the discussion, which will be recorded for those who are unable to attend at the scheduled time.

Topic: IAH Courses and Generative AI Workshop
Time: Oct 9, 2023 01:00 PM Eastern Time (US and Canada)

I co-wrote this attached article with Rich Bellon to describe how to better frame the "value" of HPS courses for students taking required humanities courses for an audience of History & Philosophy of Science educators. It's called "How to engage students in required HPS courses, part 2: The "value" of HPS" It was published in the Canadian Society for HPS' Communiqué newsletter in Autumn 2023 in the "Innovative Pedagogy" section (p.30-31). If you teach an IAH class or another Gen Ed course it might be helpful advice for how to frame the benefits of your course.

Welcome to our new members! We are happy to have you along for the ride. Marohang and I plan on running the community for the 2023-2024 academic year as 'Digital Collaborative Learning for the 21st Century 2.0.' Keep your eyes and ears open for upcoming meetings as we get into late August this summer. In the meantime, here is a link to our finalized Call for Papers for an upcoming special issue of the Journal of Global Literacies, Technologies, and Emerging Pedagogies. Thank you for a great year, and we look very forward to continuing the conversation next year.

Kind Regards,

Stokes and Marohang
