Have you heard of "THE PALS APPROACH"?

PALS is a methodology to use when you hear someone say something that may be problematic or hurtful to a specific group of people or yourself. The major objective of this approach is to stay connected with the person and speak your truth clearly.

On November 6th, all of the graduate school teaching fellows met for the first all fellows meeting on November 6th. Dr. Kirstin Parkin ran a workshop on Equitable and Culturally Responsive Teaching Practices where we discussed ways to make the classroom a more inclusive place. She mentioned how impactful a introductory survey can be in getting to know your students, so I thought I'd share my version here.

With summer (beach) reading in mind, I've complied a working bibliography, of sorts, containing (mostly) recent titles that provide practical information on motivating and engaging students, critical thinking, universal design for learning, collaborative learning, reflective learning, culturally responsive and inclusive teaching practices, Ed Tech and digital learning among other approaches. All are readily available through Amazon. I hope you might find a few of the titles useful as we steam through the coming summer months and toward Fall 2022.

According to Derald Wing Sue, “microaggressions are every day encounters of subtle discrimination that people of various marginalized identities experience throughout their lives.” They are often subtle and unintentional and the person who commits a microaggression is often unaware they have hurt someone. Nonetheless, the accumulated impact of daily microaggressions cause real pain, anxiety, depression, self doubt and may even have adverse health impacts on the recipients.

Thank you everyone for an interesting year of discussion in and around the ongoing challenge of how we might better motivate and engage our students in the physical and digital classroom here at MSU. Maybe there are a couple of titles here that might provide some lighter "beach reading" as we look forward to some downtime after a couple of difficult years.
