I just heard about the idea of "enduring understandings" and thought I'd share some resources that have been helpful. This website from the Pedagogy Resources at the University of Alaska Fairbank (UAF) has lots of great info! From a brief explanation of the concept to applying the ideas in your course (including considerations for online) - I'm excited to think more about what this looks like in my day-to-day.

Attached below is the UAF Understanding by Design Tree, a tool to help in planning your course as a way to help identify what you expect students to get out of the course and how those “results” will be distributed between assignments and scaffolded through course content.

MSU University Communications has posted a great resource on guidelines for using generative AI. This guide is a great place to start exploring potential uses of AI in your instructional practice. Further, this guide offers some descriptions and explanations of terms you may have encountered, but are not fully sure of the meaning. Part 1
The first hour will be focused on general concepts and implications of generative AI (genAI) to your current course. This workshop will introduce you to the concept of genAI and Large Language Models (LLM). We will look at what can be done with them, how students might use them, and how you might think about them in your classroom. You will be given a chance to reflect and discuss how these tools might interact with your assignment prompts and how you might think about your assessment structure.

Part 2
The second hour will be more open for exploration of tools and specific examples of curriculum. Examples will be given for incorporating genAI into disciplinary objectives and what additional genAI skills might be added to course goals. As part of this discussion, we can examine three genAI tools: ChatGPT, Midjourney, and Khanmigo.

Registration is now open for the Basic Needs Educator Training, which will be held in-person on Tuesday, April 2nd from 9:30AM-11:30AM. This training aims to equip MSU advisors and instructors with knowledge and skills to identify and support students who are having difficulty in meeting one or more basic needs. The training will cover how to navigate these sensitive situations with compassion, respect boundaries, and connect students with campus and community resources.

Participants will also have an opportunity to put together finals week thriving kits to take back to their spaces and share with students. A wishlist has been created if you are interested in donating items for the finals week thriving kits. All items not used for the thriving kits will be donated to divisions on campus that stock free self-care items and toiletries for students, including the Student Parent Resource Center. Items are linked to Amazon but do not have to be purchased from this site.

Upon successful completion of the Basic Needs Educator Training, attendees will receive a digital certificate of completion.

📚 AI Submissions Outperform Students in Recent Study

A PLOS ONE study found that 94% of AI-generated assignments went undetected, with grades averaging half a grade higher than those of real students. There was also an 83.4% chance AI submissions would outperform a random selection of student work across modules.

A study in Assessment & Evaluation in Higher Education highlights student and educator confusion over acceptable AI use in assessments. Many rely on personal judgment or Grammarly analogies. The authors propose the Dynamic Educational Boundaries Model to embed clear AI-use guidelines directly into assessments.

Hey everyone, we have a CEIG grant to develop resources and training around helping trainers be aware and educated of best practiced related to creating and facilitating educational materials and programs.
