Hi Ungraders,
Thanks to all who were able to attend our 4/4 session and greetings to those who weren't able to. I wanted to post the questions that were indicated as "follow up needed" as folks left the space last week so we can continue the conversation, sharing, and support. In no particular they are:
1. How to encourage/increase undergrad/student readiness?
2. How do we ensure ungrading doesn't reproduce grade inequities?
3. How do you set students up to manage self-direction?
4. How to negotiate internal and external ecosystems - jobs?
5. How can we keep the atmosphere competitive even with ungrading?
I hope folks can simmer on these and share reflections, ideas, and resources as they come up. Also, I hope folks can add more questions, ideas, and resources.
~Brittany

Example Basic Needs Syllabus Statement
Any student in this class who experiences difficulty affording groceries or accessing sufficient food to eat every day, or who lacks a safe and stable place to live, and believes this may affect their performance in our course, is urged to contact an academic advisor for support. You may also contact the MSU Student Food Bank (http://foodbank.msu.edu) for help getting access to healthy foods. Furthermore, if you are experiencing any other challenges with basic needs, you may also notify me, and I will work to connect you with any further resources that I have access to.
The above is an example of a basic needs statement that you can include in your syllabus, from an actual course, using language developed from an MSU Basic Needs & Advising Workshop. The CTLI is working on a template Basic Needs statement for our syllabus resources playlist https://iteach.msu.edu/pathways/364/playlist and I'll update this post once it's available.

Returning to the Classroom After a Tragedy: A 7-step Approach to Starting Class Again
This week, faculty, instructors, and graduate assistants will be returning to their classes for the first time after the tragic events of this week. There will be some classes where they have lost one of their classmates, which may add to the intensity of the experience of both students and instructors. Included in the resource attached (3-page PDF) are recommendations for how to structure the return to class for your students and yourselves, with trauma-informed considerations and practices.
This artifact is one of a collection of evidence-based resources for educators coming back to class after collective tragedy was compiled by Spartans:
Jason Moser (Professor of Clinical Science, Cognition, and Cognitive Neuroscience in MSU's Department of Psychology & PhD Psychology | Clinical Science)
Jon Novello (Director of MSU Employee Assistant Program & Licensed Clinical Social Worker)
Mark Patishnock (Director of MSU Counseling and Psychiatric Services [CAPS] & Licensed Psychologist)
Joshua Turchan (Assistant Director of Training, Assessment and Planning at MSU CAPS & Licensed Psychologist)
Karen Stanley-Kime (Assistant Director of Intensive Clinical Services at MSU CAPS & Licensed Psychologist)
and more throughout University Health and Wellness departments.

"Grief is the normal response of sorrow, heartache, and confusion that comes from losing someone or something important to you. Grief can also be a common human response after a disaster or other traumatic event. This tip sheet contains information about grief, the grieving process, and what happens when the process is interrupted and complicated or traumatic grief occurs. It also offers tips and resources for coping with both types of grief."
"Tips for Survivors: COPING WITH GRIEF AFTER A DISASTER OR TRAUMATIC EVENT" a 4-page PDF from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) is attached.

I had the good fortune to attend an enlightening workshop today: "Student-Centered Approach to Grading" presented by Jeremy Van Hof and Monica Mills. Among the resources they provided was this treasure trove: https://www.gettoby.com/p/jp9xrk523nt1

Did you know that when MSU went remote due to the Covid19 pandemic, past face-to-face Teaching Toolkit Tailgate (TTT) “tools” (AKA content) were shared in a #iteachmsu group? You can access all the TTT resources by joining the Teaching Toolkit Tailgate group! https://iteach.msu.edu/groups/teaching-toolkit-tailgate/articles
