After the workshop ended, we struck up a discussion about the issue of scale when it comes to creative assignments, namely:

How do you incorporate creativity/alternative modalities into especially large classes?

The example from our discussion was the 450-person IAH courses that run in lecture halls, but we could certainly use this discussion to comment on the ways we scale creative assignments to class size as well.

What experience do you have with handling the challenges of creativity with a large group? Alternately, if you have any sources that address this question, please feel free to share here as well!

Hello again everyone! Marohang and I look forward to you joining us for the kick-off meeting of out learning community for AY2023-2024 tomorrow morning, 10 to 11am (East Lansing Time) Friday, September 22, 2023. We'll revisit the primary aims behind our community and see where the conversation takes us although we are very interested in a more conscious effort to bring Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) pedagogy into the conversation this year, examine how a digital-collaborative approach to teaching and learning can democratize the creation and sharing of knowledge, and explore how the advent of generative artificial intelligence (AI) might have a positive role to play in our work with 21st century students. We hope you can join us!

The WOCI and the English Department will be co-hosting a workshop on trauma-informed classroom techniques for graduate students on Tuesday, February 28th at 1pm via Zoom. This is a follow up to the discussion that was held on February 17th (Feminist strategies for teaching during a crisis). All are welcome. Dr. LeConté Dill, who will be facilitating the workshop, will be paying particular attention to how womxn of color navigate teaching in the days and weeks following a traumatic event. This workshop aims to provide a space for graduate student instructors to learn how to show up for their students with a politics of care and a particular sensitivity to what students have just been through here at MSU. A flyer is attached for your review. Please share broadly.

It's the start of Week Three! Now that enrollments have stabilized, I have students begin working in student learning teams of four-five people this week for the rest of the semester. To assist the student learning teams in my courses, I developed three brief Doodly whiteboard animations in May-June '21 that replace some rather pedestrian Prezi videos used during the 2020-2021 AY. I embed code for these animations in my Week Three course modules on D2L and direct students to them in the Week Three 'Start Here!' guidelines, which are both emailed and shared at the top of the related course module, so student have them in two places. The procedure is similar each week. Anyway, here are links to the animations for those who might be interested:

Virtual Community and Collaboration | 2-minute poll: https://forms.office.com/r/ZgQwUg3gSH

How are you using technology to build and sustain virtual communities, at MSU and beyond MSU?

I'm asking because I have really struggled to answer this for my own grad students and colleagues, I'm frustrated with insufficient answers from MSU IT, and I don't have time to experiment with every tool out there! This question is about connecting and collaborating beyond the level of an individual class. Do you just rely on email and maybe a shared folder somewhere? Do you use Teams with colleagues? Do you have a Team or other online group for all the students in your program? How do you connect with alumni? Do you have social media channels, groups, etc.? Do you use a platform to collaborate with colleagues at other institutions?

The poll has 3 brief questions. Results will appear as word clouds for now but may be re-built into a poll with multi-select items or upvoting-downvoting functions.
