On November 6th, all of the graduate school teaching fellows met for the first all fellows meeting on November 6th. Dr. Kirstin Parkin ran a workshop on Equitable and Culturally Responsive Teaching Practices where we discussed ways to make the classroom a more inclusive place. She mentioned how impactful a introductory survey can be in getting to know your students, so I thought I'd share my version here.

Apropos Garth's reminder below, here's a new video from the the guys at New Ed Tech Classroom with information on five highly useful apps, one of which is ChatGPT, and [possible ways to use them in our teaching. Granted, they are thinking along K-12 lines, but there is much that is applicable to working with our college students in various modalities. Here's the link:

With summer (beach) reading in mind, I've complied a working bibliography, of sorts, containing (mostly) recent titles that provide practical information on motivating and engaging students, critical thinking, universal design for learning, collaborative learning, reflective learning, culturally responsive and inclusive teaching practices, Ed Tech and digital learning among other approaches. All are readily available through Amazon. I hope you might find a few of the titles useful as we steam through the coming summer months and toward Fall 2022.

Research shows that diversity makes us smarter. Designing an inclusive classroom that allows students to share differing opinions in a brave space where people are treated with dignity can result in good learning outcomes for all. Conflict is a natural part of learning, and differences of opinion expressed in appropriate ways allow everyone to grow. An inclusive classroom allows the instructor to manage conflict in a way that harnesses differences so that they serve as learning opportunities for all.
