Hello again everyone,

Namaskar/Sewaro! We, Stokes and Marohang, invite you to join our “Digital Collaborative Learning for the 21st Century 2.0 Learning Community” on 10-11am on Friday, December 08, 2023 US Eastern Time (ET) Kathmandu Time 7:45 PM.

We look forward to continuing the discussion of the use of digital and cloud-based tools in our work with students across all modalities, as well as the challenges and opportunities that digital collaborative practices afford both students and instructors. We are interested in exploring links between digital collaborative learning and diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) pedagogy, and how the rise of generative artificial intelligence (AI) might play a role these activities and aims.

MSU Employee Assistance Program & Health4U have compiled a document of Physical and Mental Health Resources related to the following areas: crisis, food & eating, grief resources (for adults as well as children & teens) and support groups, housing assistance, MI family resources, local municipalities/courts, Perinatal Mood Disorders & Postpartum Support resources and support groups, physical health, relationship violence and sexual misconduct, student loans, substance use disorder, and more.

This artifact is one of a collection of evidence-based resources for educators coming back to class after collective tragedy compiled by Spartans:

Religious Observance at MSU

All members of the MSU community, including educators and students, are eligible to observe their religious beliefs. Designing your course schedule to avoid conflicts with major days of religious observance will reduce the need to resolve individual conflicts and will better reflect and serve MSU's diverse and multicultural community.

The Office of the Provost website maintains a religious observance calendar and FAQ page (https://provost.msu.edu/academic-resources/religious-observance-calendar with dates through 2026) for educators and students. Educators are encouraged to consult this calendar before scheduling exams, tests, and major assignments.

"In the Eye of the Storm: Students’ Perceptions of Helpful Faculty Actions Following a Collective Tragedy"
by Therese A. Huston (Seattle University) & Michele DiPietro (Carnegie Mellon University) looks at the ways instructors respond following a tragedy, as well as student reactions to the variety of most common actions.

Abstract
On occasion, our campus communities are shaken by national tragedies such as hurricane Katrina and the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, or by local tragedies such as the murder of a faculty member or student. Because these are unusual circumstances, faculty are often initially confused about how to respond, and later have little or no sense of how effective their actions have been (DiPietro, 2003). This paper investigates the most common instructor responses following a tragedy and which of those responses students find most helpful. Implications for faculty and faculty developers are discussed.

"Posttraumatic Stress Among Students After the Shootings at Virginia Tech" (Hughes et al., 2011) provides a discussion of findings from a cross-sectional survey of Virginia Tech students the summer/fall following the April 16, 2007 shooting of 49 students and faculty using the Trauma Screening Questionnaire to assess PTSD symptoms. The 9-page PDF article from Volume 3, Number 4, of Psychological Trauma: Theory, Research, Practice, and Policy is attached below.

ASK ME ANYTHING - Kristen Mapes - Building your digital presence and website development

There are many ways to cultivate your digital presence as a scholar, and it often comes down to making decisions about what audience you are trying to reach and what activity will be manageable for you now and moving forward. In my work, I lead an 8-week long Digital Fellows program that works with faculty, staff, and graduate students to strategically develop their digital presence based around their own professional goals. I can speak to the Domains Initiative at MSU, which provides server space and website creation support, as well as to the brand-new MSU Commons, a social network and open access platform that connects MSU scholars with a wider community of over 23,000 scholars from around the world, and which also serves as MSU's institutional repository for open access materials.
