Tried a new discussion with my 200-level course on the first day! Brief explanation about what generative AI is and asked - "Is it better to be a robot or a human? Why?" After lots of responses about emotional connection, empathy, and outlets for our personal experiences, I asked, "How do you plan to bring your human-ness to our class?" They talked about wanting to hear others' personal experiences, perspectives, and ideas about solving social problems. They want to show empathy for their peers and they want to receive it. Part of my syllabus AI policy reads, "The use of AI robs us all of the opportunity to learn from our human experiences and from each other, to play with our creative freedoms, to problem-solve, and to contribute our ideas in authentic ways. In a nutshell, college is a place for learning and critical thinking. AI simply cannot do that learning for us. Use of AI (like ChatGPT) to complete any class assignment is considered academic misconduct in this class." I used the discussion as a way for them to do this rationalizing for themselves.
Assessment in my class includes weekly quizzes (which could pretty easily be answered with AI; just meant to be a concept check) and semester-long project-based skills development assignments.

No matter what subject matter we are teaching, the size of our class, or the time we devoted to creating an inclusive classroom, conflict is part of the learning process. Conflict may erupt due to any number of things, including problematic humor, language that is viewed by some as oppressive, stereotypes, or microaggressions.

After attending a learning community yesterday afternoon (and looking at MSU's online guidelines) on diversity, equity, and inclusion, I took a stab at putting together a two-minute Doodly video on the subject but pitched to the students in my courses. I've embedded it within the Week Six module of each course since part of student teamwork next week will be assessing their team dynamic, habits, and processes in the completion of Project #1, which teams are turning in on Friday, October 1st. Invariably, there will be a few teams who had interpersonal and/or work habit problems due to procrastination, poor planning, or weak organization. I've tried to use very basic DEI guidelines/definitions as a way to help teams think about their approach and improve collaboration for the latter 2/3 of the semester. See what you think. Massive changes have occurred recently with regard to artificial intelligence (AI) and the ability of the public to generate novel text and images using AI tools (e.g. ChatGPT). Many in education are concerned with what this means for assessing student understanding: if a student can generate a novel, accurate essay on almost any topic, how will you assess learning from short-answer and essay assignments?
On 02/01/2023, a campus collaboration of the APUE STEM+ Ed@State, Enhanced Digital Learning Initiative (EDLI), Center for Teaching and Learning Innovation (CTLI), MSU Libraries, and MSU IT EdTech, hosted the "Symposium on AI in Education and Academic Writing". During the symposium, the basics of how AI works were shared and attendees had opportunities to play with some AI tools. The event provided opportunities to hear how faculty are addressing these challenges, discuss concerns and opportunities with colleagues, and reflect on individual teaching philosophies in the time of artificial intelligence (AI).

If we are completely honest with ourselves, many students come into our courses lacking basic planning and organization skills. Even when armed with a syllabus, course schedule, or online course modules, many still have difficulty planning for and carrying out weekly assignments and/or projects by designated due dates.
To assist them, I suggest that we include due dates for assignments, projects, quizzes and exams not just in our syllabi or online course modules, but that we should also include what I call an 'Important Due Dates' tab in the D2L pages we set up for our courses. Likewise, I suggest we do so whether we teach in a traditional face to face setting, hybrid, or online.
A quarter century of teaching undergraduates leads me to conclude that few consult the syllabus (or online modules) in more than a cursory way after Week One. More generally, when people have to search for something, they are less likely to find it. So, be sure to drag your 'Important Due Dates' tab to the very top of all other tabs on the left side of your D2L course content page, making it as easy as possible for students to find.
They will then be able to access all of the dates for assignments, projects, quizzes, or exams in one place without the need to wade through denser, text heavy syllabi, course schedules, or weekly course modules. At a glance, they can find what they need to know and prepare accordingly.
Given the various challenges so many young people seem to face in 2021, why not make things as easy as we can for the students in our courses?

We are writing to invite you to join the pilot program for H5P’s D2L integration and a few special features.
Through CTLI’s Catalyst Innovation Program, we are giving out a limited number of free H5P.com accounts for faculty/grad students for this academic year. This will allow you to create lots of different types of activities, assign them to your students through D2L, have their grades automatically populated in the Gradebook (if desired), and also receive data about how your students interacted with the content.
The D2L H5P basic integration lets you:
Insert activities with one click directly into a D2L course (no more embed codes requiring activities to be public or going through another provider like Pressbooks)
Connect select activities with the D2L Gradebook
+ our subscription also includes these special features:
Detailed reports on how learners interact with the activity, no matter where the H5P activity is in the course (as a topic or in a page)
Let learners resume activities (especially useful for larger content types like Interactive Video/Course Presentation/Interactive Book)
+ Smart Import feature (AI) lets you import audio/text/video and you will get quick transcripts and suggested activities pre-built that will shorten activity creation time (currently only in English, more languages to be added soon).
Any activities you create via our pilot account using Smart AI, for example, can certainly be exported out to a different regular H5P account(s).
Some of you might have also looked into nolej.io recently (very similar to Smart Import), but we have been told that H5P.com is much better with regards to compliance, privacy, security and stability.
You could contact me (gacs@msu.edu) or Shannon Quinn (sdquinn@msu.edu) to request an account, you will be given a form to fill out listing any D2L course shells (development courses or communities would work too) where you would like to test the H5P integration.
