Michigan State University on Generative Artificial Intelligence (AI)
As you prepare for the Fall 2023 academic semester, our hopes are that instructors will 1) develop a course-level generative AI use policy and actively discuss with students about expectations for generative AI use in the work for your class, 2) promote equitable and inclusive use of the technology, and 3) work with colleagues across campus to determine ethical and scholarly applications of generative AI for preparing students to succeed in an evolving digital landscape. The following materials were assembled using existing MSU policy documents and include framing questions developed by an interdisciplinary team of campus experts. To help facilitate this work, the Center for Teaching and Learning Innovation (CTLI) and the Enhanced Digital Learning Initiative (EDLI) will be producing resources, offering workshops, and facilitating discussions throughout the year.
You can learn more about generative AI and participate in discussions here on iteach.msu.edu. Click section 3 of this playlist for additional resources on generative AI on #iteachmsu!

#iteachmsu FAQ
What is a “commons”?
Teaching Commons: “an emergent conceptual space for exchange and community among faculty, students, and all others committed to learning as an essential activity of life in contemporary democratic society” (Huber and Hutchings, 2005, p.1). #iteachmsu Commons content may be discipline-specific or transdisciplinary, but will always be anchored in teaching competency areas.
What will I find there?
You will find posts, articles, curated playlists, and a campus-wide teaching and learning events calendar. Posts are brief less formal pieces of content. Articles can be slightly more formal in nature and are usually longer with greater detail. Playlists are collections of articles that are curated by individuals or institutional units. The events calendar aims to be the “one-stop-shop” for all educator related goings-on.
Am I an educator?
The short answer… do you contribute to the teaching and learning mission of the university? If so, then YES you are an educator. The founding partners of the #iteachmsu Commons, Academic Advancement Network, The Graduate School, and The Hub for Innovation in Learning and Technology, believe that a wide educator community (faculty, Teaching Assistants, Undergraduate Learning Assistants, instructional designers, academic advisors, librarians, coaches, et al.) helps learning happen at MSU. #iteachmsu is hashtag, a statement, a public declaration of pride in one’s teaching practice and educator identity, and hopefully a movement. You are #iteachmsu!
Why should I join?
On such a large campus, it can be difficult to fully recognize and leverage the MSU community’s teaching and learning contributions, especially when so much of our institution is decentralized - leaving colleges, departments, and units to manage their own educator development. The #iteachmsu Commons provides an educator-driven space for sharing teaching resources, connecting across educator networks, and growing teaching practice.
How do I join?
Visit iteach.msu.edu and click the “Log in” button in the upper right-hand corner. Use your MSU netID to log on with Single Sign-On. Now you have full access to contribute to the Commons! Build your bio. Share updates, questions, and celebrations via posts. Add to articles with your practical insights or scholarly work. Connect with others! (Note: anyone can visit the Commons and consume content, but only members of the MSU community with a netID can log in and contribute content at this time.)

Creating an assessment in the #iteachmsu Commons
An assessment in the commons is a self-contained learning object that may contain youtube videos, quizzes, embedded files or other things.
To create one select the add button in the upper right-hand corner of the screen and select “Assessment.”
Here you will be given similar options to creating a post or an article where you can provide an image, a title, an introduction to the learning object, which group it should belong to, its category and its visibility.
Continuing allows you to create a sequence of individual pages that may have media at the top and text below.
You can publish from here or select save and exit.
Note that currently, hitting save and exit will allow you to go back to the learning object and add more pages along with self-assessment questions as needed.

#iteachmsu: A brief history
In the beginning…
Much of our work toward #iteachmsu began through a graduate-student-led effort called Inside Teaching MSU in our Graduate School. Inside Teaching MSU launched to catalyze the expertise of many graduate student teaching assistants and instructors, that could be shared with colleagues across disciplines and aimed to challenge the conventional ideas of who is an educator and where learning takes place. As the adoption of this expanded definition of "educator" that was the foundation of this effort grew, three partners- the MSU Hub for Innovation in Learning and Technology, the Graduate School, and the Academic Advancement Network (AAN)- came together to build an educator "commons". The#iteachmsu Commons is a digital space where all MSU educators can share ideas and resources, connect with one another across roles and disciplines, and grow in their practice!
A Hashtag...Throughout social networks, #iteachmsu, has gained institutional traction as not only a statement or a hashtag, but as a public declaration of teaching practice and educator identity. Educators have taken up the rallying cry “I teach MSU” by sharing out reflections, celebrations, and practices online! #iteachmsu even functions as a connection builder, bringing two- now- Champions together!A Platform...
A digital site, iteach.msu.edu, designed for educators by educators at MSU. The site aims to create a single centralized resource on a campus that is often challenged by its decentralized nature. It is also home to the Thank an Educator initiative which aims to elevate and celebrate the high-impact practices and contributions of all educators through a peer-recognition program. For more information on the functions of this space as a platform, check out the Getting Started playlist!A Movement...
The #iteachmsu Commons defines “educators” at Michigan State University in the broadest possible manner. Here we deliberately use the term 'educator' to refer to individuals that support the teaching and learning mission of the university. Educators could include but are not limited to faculty, graduate teaching assistants, undergraduate learning assistants, instructional designers, and academic advisors. If you contribute to MSU’s mission of teaching and learning in any way, you are invited to contribute to and engage with this community (by logging in with your MSU netID).
We believe this shift is an important and deliberate move toward sharing and centering teaching and learning as important across higher education. This moment provides new opportunities for addressing what has always been a valuable but highly complex task for educator development.

#iteachmsu Educator Awards
What are the #iteachmsu Awards?
Gratitude is so important especially for the wide educator community (including but not limited to faculty, GTAs, ULAs, instructional designers, academic advisors, librarians, coaches, etc.) who help support learning across MSU. At #iteachmsu, we believe in elevating, recognizing, and celebrating those contributions is vital. The #iteachmsu Educator Awards are dedicated to honoring individuals who have been recognized through the Thank an Educator initiative. This is a simple but important act of saying thank you and recognizing the great work of educator colleagues across campus. To learn more about Thank an Educator more broadly check out this #iteachmsu article and this MSU Today article!
Why do the Awards exist?
While the collaborating units and the #iteachmsu project team are excited about the aforementioned “wide educator community”, we have found through informational interviews and observations (as well as conversations with our diverse advisory group and content contributors) that individuals across roles that contribute to the teaching and learning mission of the university may not personally identify as educators. We established the Thank an Educator initiative and are recognizing those individuals with the #iteachmsu Educator Awards to:
help demonstrate the diversity of educators across roles on campus
help individuals associate their name/work with “educator” and embrace their educator identity
celebrate the amazing individuals we have shaping the learning experiences and success of students on our campus.
How are #iteachmsu Educator Award recipients recognized?
In the inaugural year of the #iteachmsu Educator Awards (2019) a brief ceremony and casual reception were held as a conclusion to the Spring Conference on Teaching, Learning, and Student Success. Awardees were designated with a flag on their name tags and picked up their #iteachmsu Educator Award certificates (along with their nomination stories) at reception with food and drink. Dr. Jeff Grabill, Associate Provost at the time, gave a brief welcome and introduction to some of the foundations of #iteachmsu. Then former Provost Youatt concluded the formal portion of the ceremony with congratulations and thoughts on the importance of educator work.
The global pandemic and resulting remote work (2020-21) forced us to think differently about how to hold public events, and while the shift was challenging and uncomfortable at times we have emerged with a way to uplift #iteachmsu Educator Award recipients in a more public way. Instead of a small reception, recognized individuals are being recognized publically via articles here on iteach.msu.edu. They each receive the same Educator Award materials- which are distributed digitally.
How can you submit an educator for an #iteachmsu Educator Award?
Anyone can recognize a fellow Spartan for their contributions to MSU's teaching and learning mission or for how they made a lasting impression on your experience. All you have to do is click "Thank an Educator" in the left panel of iteach.msu.edu. From there you'll see a short form where you can enter the name, netID, and a short story of the educator you'd like to recognize.
