We are extending an invitation for presentation proposals on select teaching and learning topics across a wide array of presentation formats, including synchronous digital sessions on May 11th to accommodate virtual attendees. The deadline for submissions is February 17th.

The conference committee welcomes presentations on post-secondary education that address one or more of these core topics:

Presentations may be in-person or virtual.
Paper Presentation: individual papers authored by one or more people, delivered in 15-to-20 minutes. Individual papers will be grouped according to topic and delivered in a multi-paper session that includes a 15-minute question period.
Workshop: this format will include participatory exercises where attendees will learn about a select educational topic or practice from an expert practitioner. These sessions will run for 50-to-60 minutes and include a 15-minute question period.
Welcome to my Classroom: these 50-to-60-minute sessions will feature a short overview of a teaching and learning theory or practice followed by a demonstration of active pedagogy. The audience will be positioned as learners, according to the educational and disciplinary context, and observe the presenter’s demonstration of actual classroom exercises and practices. The sessions will conclude with a 15-to-20-minute discussion or question period.
Learning Technology Demonstration: these 15-to-20-minute demonstrations of learning technologies will be grouped according to topic and delivered in a multi-presentation session that concludes with a 15-minute question period.

A calming influence: Managing conflict and difficult conversations in the university classroom
At CTLI, we've compiled resources for educators to review when preparing for potentially contentious classroom discussions Domestic and global conflicts and controversies often impact our students in diverse and uniquely personal ways. Some MSU educators mentioned increased tension and potential for disruptions in your classroom. Students are coming to learn with a diverse array of perspectives, experiences, and identities that shape how they experience the world. Navigating classroom discussions on charged societal issues or current events can be extremely challenging.
The resources curated here offer guidance on fostering civil discourse and managing disruptive behavior in the classroom. We hope these resources equip you with strategies and best practices for maintaining a respectful learning environment where all students feel safe and heard. This collection includes guidelines on setting expectations for dialogue, maintaining calm, tips for redirecting off-topic or uncivil comments, sample facilitation methods for controversial discussions, and ways to de-escalate a hot-moment.
As educators, we all share the responsibility of creating classrooms where learning can thrive. In times of tension, our first priority should be to seek to understand. The role of the teacher in conflict situations is to be the agent of calm, to seek to diffuse tension, and to foster an environment where learning can happen whenever possible. With compassion and care, we can model civil engagement across differences, while also drawing reasonable boundaries around conduct. Our hope is that these resources will help equip you to handle tense situations with wisdom, patience and cultural sensitivity. (please note this collection is in progress)

Welcome to my Classroom Series
Our Welcome to My Classroom series aims to be a catalyst for continuous improvement, uniting educators in their commitment to elevate the art of teaching. Join us in celebrating the dedication and creativity that drive education forward, as we learn from one another and collectively enrich the learning experience for both educators and students alike. The "Welcome to My Classroom" series functions like a pedagogy and practice show and tell where educators from throughout MSU's ecosystem share something from their teaching and learning practice. Examples of an educator's showcase could include a walk through of a specific activity or assignment, sharing out the integration of a particular educational technology, describing their process of redesigning a learning experience, and more! File-sharing in ZOOM
In-Meeting file transfer allows you to send files to other meeting participants during the meeting through the in-meeting chat.
Enabling In-Meeting File Transfer
For Your Account
To enable the In-Meeting file transfer feature for all members of your organization:
Sign in to the Zoom web portal as an administrator with the privilege to edit account settings.
Click Account Management > Account Settings.
Navigate to the File Transfer option on the Meeting tab and verify that the setting is enabled.If the setting is disabled, click the Status toggle to enable it. If a verification dialog displays, choose Turn On to verify the change.
(Optional) If you want to make this setting mandatory for all users in your account, click the lock icon, and then click Lock to confirm the setting.
Limiting the File Types That Can be Shared
For security purposes, the file types/file extensions that can be shared via file transfer can be limited at the account level, by the account owner or an admin on the account.
Sign into the Zoom web portal as an administrator with the privilege to edit account settings.
Click Account Management > IM Management
Click the IM Settings tab.
Navigate to the File Transfer option
Enable Only allow specified file types.
Enter the allowed file types/extensions, with a comma to separate each extension.

Disable Participant Permissions in ZOOM (including screen share)
Settings you can enable or disable as the meeting host (at the bottom of the participants list):

OneDrive is an application within Microsoft Office that allows users to store and share files. Also known as SpartanDrive within the MSU community, this file-hosting service syncs with other programs within the Microsoft Office suite, such as Word, PowerPoint, Excel, and Outlook.
Why is One Drive Important?
With its cloud-based storage, OneDrive allows you to access your files from any device. This is perfect for freeing up space from your devices as well as accessing files while on the go. It also affords you the ability to share any of your files securely, making it a great tool for collaborative projects.
How do I access OneDrive?
OneDrive can be accessed via office.com or spartan365.msu.edu by logging in with your MSU credentials.

TLC During a Pandemic: Graduate TAs Build a Community Through Sharing Teaching Practices

Abstract:
When the pandemic hit unexpectedly, it disrupted some of our personal and professional connections, and the unexpected transition to remote teaching and learning changed some of our learning environments. However, not having to convene in certain physical locations offered new opportunities to establish and cultivate connections on an expansive level through a myriad of virtual spaces.
In this presentation, we share one such virtual community, the GTA TLC (Teaching Learning Community), which has afforded GTAs the opportunity to connect across disciplines and physical distance to share best practices, tools, technologies, methods, and ways of effective teaching. The GTA TLC has formed a community that meets bi-weekly and opens the door to whoever wants to connect with their fellow GTAs and any teaching enthusiasts to share, discuss, and reflect on innovative ideas around instruction. Not only has this space leveraged knowledge building but also created friendships across time zones, spaces, disciplines, and diverse backgrounds. The emphasis has been placed on the co-construction of knowledge while enhancing student engagement and student success in different settings from the lens of multiple GTA roles
In this information session, we will showcase excerpts of the best attended sessions including culturally responsive pedagogy, accessibility and technology tools for student engagement, feedback data from participants, and testimonials about the impact and growth of this community. All of these goals have been nested within our overarching theme of well-being that nurtures our GTA TLC, thereby elevating their awareness of students’ needs and holistic well-being.

This article was shared in an academic group I'm a part of on a social networking site... it's framing is within the Canadian Higher Education setting, but the message about student mental health is relevant for all.
Here are a couple of thoughts from the article worth sharing if you can't take the time to read the entire piece:
"To fully understand the present crisis, one has to appreciate a fundamental and often overlooked fact: higher education is not what it used to be. Not only do we have a more diverse student body with equally diverse psychiatric needs, we also have an academic culture that has changed profoundly in the past six decades, making the university experience more stressful than it once was. The classic liberal conception of postsecondary institutions as places where young people take a kind of sabbatical from life—read the great books, engage in endless debates, and learn to see themselves as citizens—has given way to a new model, more narrowly vocational in focus."
"By prioritizing high achievers, Henderson argues, universities are selecting not only for diligent candidates but also for those who view scholastic success as central to their identities. For such students, a bad grade can be destabilizing. When that grade appears on an exam worth 80 percent of a final course mark, or when it comes from a harried teaching assistant who doesn’t offer in-depth feedback, students can feel like they are losing a game whose rules were never explained. Imagine being told all your life that you are ahead of the pack and that you must stay there, both to secure a stable future and to get a return on the investments that family members or granting agencies have made on your behalf. Then, imagine falling behind, for reasons you don’t understand, at the precise moment when staying on top feels more critical than ever before. Furthermore, imagine that you are contending with profound loneliness, past trauma, and financial insecurity, all while working a part-time job with the usual mix of erratic hours."
"Such stressors can lead to sleep disruption, irregular eating, and substance abuse—all of which correlate with mental illness—or they can trigger preexisting psychiatric conditions. They can deplete reserves of neurochemicals, like dopamine and serotonin, needed to sustain a sense of well-being, or they can flood the brain and body with cortisol, the stress hormone, which, in excess, can push people into near-constant states of anxiety, making it difficult to conceptualize daily challenges in a proportionate or healthy way. They can also lead to identity confusion and an acute sense of shame."

Join the MSU Libraries and Lansing’s The Poetry Room for an afternoon of poetry, connection and conversation celebrating student, alumni and community voices. The event opens with performances from the MSU Poetry Club alongside recent alumni, spotlighting emerging talent and the power of being heard. The showcase will be followed by acclaimed poet, author and viral sensation Olivia Gatwood, whose work blends humor, intimacy and sharp social insight. Gatwood will share poems as well as excerpts from her 2024 novel “Whoever You Are, Honey,” offering an unfiltered look into her craft and creative journey. The afternoon will conclude with a Q&A — a mix of moderated conversation and audience participation — creating a rare opportunity to connect with one of today’s most dynamic literary voices.
Olivia Gatwood is the author of two poetry collections, “New American Best Friend” and “Life of the Party,” and co-writer of Adele’s music video “I Drink Wine.” She has received international recognition for her poetry, writing workshops and work as a Title IX-compliant educator in sexual assault prevention and recovery. Her performances have been featured on HBO, MTV, VH1, the BBC and more, with poems appearing in “The Poetry Foundation,” “Lambda Literary” and “The Missouri Review.” Originally from Albuquerque, she now lives in Los Angeles.
