Featured Educator: Jackie Martin

Jackelyn Martin has been recognized as a great educator contributing to the teaching and learning mission in the MSU community. Here are thoughts from Jackie's nominator... "As a land grant university, MSU is uniquely situated with an abundance of great educators. In addition to all the amazing on campus educators that we don't normally think of (until now)- librarians, advisors, coaches, learning designers, IT, etc.- MSU has a statewide reach of educators with MSU Extension. While there is a whole slew of MSUE educators who should be acknowledged, Jackie Martin is at the top of the list. Not only does she design, promote, facilitate, and evaluate programming around the state, she also works with youth (ages 5-19), adults, and community partners. Jackie thinks outside the box when it comes to possible partnerships and takes leadership (even in tough situations). She is wonderful to collaborate with and adaptable across audiences. She IS an MSU educator."

While her title is technically "4-H Leadership and Civic Engagement Educator", Jackie doesn't stand at the front of a classroom on MSU's campus. According to the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources and Michigan State University Extenstion, Jackie Martin is a 4-H Extension Educator with statewide responsibilities housed in Washtenaw County (Ann Arbor), Michigan. Jackie focuses on providing opportunities for youth to develop leadership skills and helps youth find their voice in democratic and community processes through an understanding of civic engagement. Jackie also works with adults to help them recognize the value of youth voice in decision-making. Jackie teaches youth a variety of tools to assist them in group decision-making including parliamentary procedure and consensus-building tools including facilitation techniques.
