Graduate education is a key portion of MSU’s mission as we prepare advanced degree recipients for a multitude of careers in the professions, industry, and the academy. Ensuring that graduate education is ethical and effective is our shared responsibility.
Following the Graduate School’s Strategic Plan, a Task Force on Graduate Student Mentoring formulated a statement of “Foundational Values for Graduate Student and Faculty Mentoring Relationships” and then developed “Guidelines for Graduate Student Mentoring and Advising.” These Values and Guidelines have been endorsed by the University Committee on Graduate Studies (UCGS) and the Council of Graduate Students (COGS).
The Guidelines expound the shared and individual rights and responsibilities in graduate education across the University, including the responsibilities of MSU, the Graduate School, academic units and graduate programs, graduate program directors and coordinators, faculty advisors, guidance committees, and graduate students.
Based on the Guidelines and the recommendations, the Graduate School will engage with and support colleges, units, faculty, and students in developing processes and policies around mentoring and in building mentoring capacity. In the coming months, the Graduate School will host and facilitate several events and workshops tied to mentoring. Additional resources to optimize mentoring relationships are available on the Graduate School website. I encourage you to engage in these opportunities.
