The MSU IT Educational Technology workshops in Feburary are continuing our D2L and Zoom/video production mini-series. If you want to review past workshops, please check out the archive of workshop recordings on the MSU Tools and Technologies site and the Instructional Technology & Development Mediaspace channel. As always, if you would like a one-on-one consultation on course design or academic technologies, please submit a service request to the MSU Help Desk and ask for the Instructional Technology & Development team.

D2L Gradebook Part 1 – Setting up an Online Gradebook 

Wednesday February 2nd, 10 a.m. – 11 a.m. ET 
Facilitators: Susan Halick & KJ Downer-Shojgreen 
This training will go into the details of how-to setup a points-based or weighted gradebook. There will be time for Q&A at the end. Specifically, participants will learn how to:     
  • Chose a grading system and display settings.  
  • Create Categories and Grade Items.   
  • Distribute weights within a category and drop the lowest score.    
  • Create bonus items and allow extra credit.    
  • Associate (connect) activities such as Assignments, Discussions, and Quizzes  
  • Setup and display grading schemes

Zoom for Interaction & Engagement, Part 2 – Breakout Rooms 

Thursday February 3rd, 10 a.m. – 11 a.m. ET 
Facilitators: Dr. Natalie Vandepol 
This interactive how-to webinar will focus on Zoom Breakout Rooms: settings, options, nuances, and updates. Specific topics will include: 
  • Account settings 
  • Pre-assigning 
  • In-meeting options 
  • Self-selected, random, or manual assignment 
  • Screen sharing to breakout rooms 
  • Chat messaging

D2L Quizzes 

Wednesday February 9th, 10 a.m. – 11 a.m. ET 
Facilitators: Jennifer Wagner & Susan Halick 
In this workshop, we will provide detailed demonstrations of how to build an exam in the D2L Quizzes tool (question types, libraries, and pools; sections & pages; shuffling, and bulk question importing), how to customize submission views, options for assessing quiz responses & publishing grades, and briefly touch on exam security measures (settings, restrictions, and proctoring).

Kaltura Mediaspace: Creating & Sharing Instructional Videos 

Thursday February 10th, 10 a.m. – 11 a.m. ET 
Facilitators: Dr. Jennifer Wagner & KJ Downer-Shojgreen 
This informational webinar will focus on Kaltura Mediaspace for creating and sharing instructional videos and video quizzes, with an emphasis on FERPA compliance. Topics covered will include: 
  • Recording and uploading videos
  • Generating and purchasing captions
  • Editing videos and video details
  • Creating video quizzes and hotspots
  • Adding videos to D2L

D2L Gradebook, Part 2 – Assessing Grade Items and Associated Activities   

Wednesday February 16th, 10 a.m. – 11 a.m. ET 
Facilitators: Susan Halick & Nick Noel 
This training on how to grade in D2L assumes you already have a D2L Gradebook set up, even if you have no control over how the gradebook was setup (e.g., grading assistants). There will be time for Q&A at the end. Specifically, participants will learn how to:
  1. Enter grades and feedback   
  2. Work with extra credit  
  3. Assess connected activities  
  4. Preview individual grades  
  5. Grade in bulk and/or exempt grades   
  6. Release a Final Calculated or Adjusted grade  
  7. Export and import grades
