First Aid For When You Have Difficulties Staying on Track with Studies: Developing Good Study Habits

Habit 1:  Preview new material before class within 24 hours.

Habit 2:  Take notes and ask questions during class.

Habit 3:  Review notes and materials, and complete examples within 24 hours after class.

Habit 4:  Use a timer to study 20-25 minutes at a time. Take a 5 minute break to step outside, get a drink of water, stretch.

Habit 5:  Keep your phone on silent and out of your sight in a different room when studying.

Practical Tips:

  • If you are easily distracted, study in a space where distractions are at a minimum.
  • Do not study in bed, because you will fall asleep.
  • Make a weekly plan to schedule study time and all your other activities to make sure you stay on track.
  • When you need help with materials ask your professor, a Graduate Teaching Assistant, or a fellow classmate for help.
