SARAH - Thanks for joining AMAs this morning! I have a couple of questions. 1) What is included in "co-curricular" activities? Is this any and all things a learned participates in that is outside of class? Maybe you could share some examples? 2) How can I as an MSU educator be more intentional about encouraging/valuing co-curricular experiences for learners?

A great way to be more intentional is to encourage engagement in their full educational experience, both by actively engaging in the classroom as well as outside of it. Engaging with My Spartan Story is a meaningful way to validate the learning and engagement of your students, as their experiences will be displayed on their Spartan Experience Record, an official MSU document that can be requested through the Registrar's Office. The learning outcomes and data collected through My Spartan Story will benefit us as educators, where we will be able to learn information on out-of-class learning that has never existed and expands potential for how we approach, shape, and execute students’ holistic learning experiences.

Thanks Sarah! Do you have any advice for educators of formal learning experience on how they can encourage or additionally validate the importance of co-curricular activities in the overall MSU experience?

Thanks for your questions, Makena! For the purposes of My Spartan Story, we have defined a co-curricular experience as "an intentional learning activity not bearing academic credit requiring student participation outside the scope of an academic course of study that contributes to a student’s achievement of undergraduate learning goals and competencies and/or academic learning outcomes." Therefore to be included in My Spartan Story and the Spartan Experience Record, experiences must include learning outcomes which are assessed, and must be experiences not included on the transcript. This can include a wide variety of experiences such as student leadership positions, on-campus jobs, internships, volunteerism, and participation in a wide variety of MSU-led programs (think Detroit Made, Media Sandbox).
