Religious Observance at MSU

All members of the MSU community, including educators and students, are eligible to observe their religious beliefs. Designing your course schedule to avoid conflicts with major days of religious observance will reduce the need to resolve individual conflicts and will better reflect and serve MSU's diverse and multicultural community.

The Office of the Provost website maintains a religious observance calendar and FAQ page (https://provost.msu.edu/academic-resources/religious-observance-calendar with dates through 2026) for educators and students. Educators are encouraged to consult this calendar before scheduling exams, tests, and major assignments.

Massive changes have occurred recently with regard to artificial intelligence (AI) and the ability of the public to generate novel text and images using AI tools (e.g. ChatGPT). Many in education are concerned with what this means for assessing student understanding: if a student can generate a novel, accurate essay on almost any topic, how will you assess learning from short-answer and essay assignments?

On 02/01/2023, a campus collaboration of the APUE STEM+ Ed@State, Enhanced Digital Learning Initiative (EDLI), Center for Teaching and Learning Innovation (CTLI), MSU Libraries, and MSU IT EdTech, hosted the "Symposium on AI in Education and Academic Writing". During the symposium, the basics of how AI works were shared and attendees had opportunities to play with some AI tools. The event provided opportunities to hear how faculty are addressing these challenges, discuss concerns and opportunities with colleagues, and reflect on individual teaching philosophies in the time of artificial intelligence (AI).

Well, we have reached the end of the road, at least for the 2021-2022 academic year. With that in mind, here is a list, no doubt incomplete, of possible ways we might foster and improvie student motivation, engagement, and success in the classroom:

Considerable overlap between some of these very broad points, but if we can incorporate even a few of these ideas into our work with undergrads, we might get just a bit closer to the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow when it comes to improved student motivation, engagement, and performance in our courses. The recently created explainer videos above are now embedded into my online course modules for Week 3-Week 12 and are presented to students in the context of fostering student learning team “cohesion” (I have made to conscious decision to avoid the terms diversity, equity, and inclusion in most instances) during weekly collaborative assignments and three larger digital projects students are asked to complete as part of my currently asynchronous online courses.

Part of my thinking behind this project has been to help prepare students for professional life after graduation – think 21st century employability skills -- given the attention paid to DEI principles and practices within the business and corporate world. The information presented in these animated explainer videos is a synthesis of other information from many different academic and corporate sources online by the way. I take no credit for it other than in the way I present it to my students, using the Doodly app. The project is developing, so I anticipate adjustments as I continue the work.

When I move to a hybrid modality as we transition back to the physical classroom next fall (???), I plan to keep and retain all of the online materials developed during the last two years of the pandemic to better support, motivate, and engage the students in my (gen. ed.) courses, another ongoing project of long standing.

As we approach February 13th, advising leadership has shared that students have the option to request a grief absence, allowing them to take necessary time away during the week of February 13th. Please guide students to reach out to their academic advisors for further details. MSU offers a STEM Teaching Essentials workshop series, which is focused on helping current, new, and future (post-docs and graduate students) STEM faculty and academic staff develop their instructional practices. MSU faculty lead these lunchtime workshops that explore essential topics in teaching and learning. The series is sponsored by the Colleges of Natural Science, Agriculture and Natural Resources, Engineering, and Lyman Briggs College. Held monthly during the academic year, the Learn at Lunch series presents informal seminars on a variety of topics related to inclusion, social justice and equity. Everyone is welcome to bring their lunch and join the conversation.

The Learn at Lunch series is sponsored in collaboration with the Academic Advancement Network, the Office of the Associate Provost for Undergraduate Education, the Graduate School and MSU Libraries. The sessions bring important topics related to inclusive teaching to the campus community, with a focus on presenting best practices and fostering dialogue in an effort to build inclusive communities.
