Check out my highlights on what I learned from Gary Roloff from Fisheries & Wildlife:

𝟏 critical thinking, synthesis of ideas & information, acquisition of contextual knowledge, and informed judgment results in empowered, confident decision making in students

✌🏽 teaching philosophies change over time. focusing on contextual knowledge teaches “clear answers” which is not the same as making informed arguments and decisions using that knowledge

💡connecting students to local and agency partners is a highlight for students & builds professional networks

🌪challenges: "if we fail to recognize and adjust our content and delivery to appeal to diverse learning styles we are not being fair"

🔥hot take: changing from testing structures📝 to oral exams🎤 provides an opportunity for students to demonstrate knowledge and explain answers. More time consuming, but the payoff is worth it

Here's a fascinating (and very useful) tutorial from Sam Kary of New EdTech for creating student choice boards in Google Docs to empower students by giving them offer a choice in how they are assessed. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2u_TXmQhIwU

And here is the link to his website The New EdTech Classroom: https://newedtechclassroom.com/

Intercultural dialogue facilitation is a science and an art. Facilitators are the single most important determinant of successful dialogue outcome. They are the engines that drive the experience to produce meaningful interaction among participants within and across groups.

DUSTIN - My experience with video making has consisted of recording zoom meetings and using my cell phone's front-facing camera. I'm a novice and low tech to say the least. What recommendations do you have for someone like me to get started? Are there key considerations I should reflect on before starting? Does MSU have any tools to help me? Where/how does accessibility come in?

Hi folks - Is anyone teaching a second-level IAH with an ecological or STEM-adjacent focus in Spring or Fall 23? I usually try to have at least a few classes students might consider for their next IAH class that build off themes/approaches from my first levels (in this case, Literature of Extinction), but I've fallen behind on seeing what other folks are teaching.

ASK ME ANYTHING with Justin Wigard - Graphic Possibilities: Teaching with Comics in the Online Classroom
As part of my ongoing work with the Graphic Possibilities research workshop here at MSU, I approach comics through two interrelated approaches, critical inquiry and engaged pedagogy, and have taught comics in several different classroom formats (lower-level in-person classes, various online synchronous environments, and most recently, in a fully asynchronous online classroom). Throughout the day, I will be online talking through approaches to teaching comics in the online classroom, including but not limited to different methodological approaches (quantitative and qualitative), how to choose the best comic for the class, and even some helpful comics-making pedagogical strategies (best tips, assessment, resources, etc). Ask Me Anything! :)
