Hello!
The MSU Department of Police and Public Safety is hosting a Community Cool Down event outside of the STEM Teaching and Learning Facility this Thursday, August 3rd, 2023 from 11:00am to 2:00pm. The event is open to all students, faculty, and staff and the goal is to provide a safe space and opportunity for the Spartan community to get energized ahead of the fall semester. There will be a DJ, yard games, cool treats, and more. We hope to see you there!

IBM is offering the MSU community a suite of online courses that take participants through a comprehensive design thinking journey. The introductory offering, The Practitioner Course, is an interactive overview of the fundamentals of human centered-design concepts. Was your social media full of Lensa AI portraits a few months ago? Artificial intelligence initially arose to automate mundane tasks and computations, but lately it’s been making waves in creative spheres. This brings up questions about intellectual property, ethical use of technology, bias in algorithms, and the nature of creativity itself. The MSU Museum CoLab Studio invites you to join us as we explore text-to-image generative AI, learning how to use the algorithms and grappling with the future implications of this technology. This hands-on workshop will be led by Mark Sullivan, a practicing photographer, composer, and the creative director of the MSU Museum CoLab Studio.

Massive changes have occurred recently with regard to artificial intelligence (AI) and the ability of the public to generate novel text and images using AI tools (e.g. ChatGPT). Many in education are concerned with what this means for assessing student understanding: if a student can generate a novel, accurate essay on almost any topic, how will you assess learning from short-answer and essay assignments?
On 02/01/2023, a campus collaboration of the APUE STEM+ Ed@State, Enhanced Digital Learning Initiative (EDLI), Center for Teaching and Learning Innovation (CTLI), MSU Libraries, and MSU IT EdTech, hosted the "Symposium on AI in Education and Academic Writing". During the symposium, the basics of how AI works were shared and attendees had opportunities to play with some AI tools. The event provided opportunities to hear how faculty are addressing these challenges, discuss concerns and opportunities with colleagues, and reflect on individual teaching philosophies in the time of artificial intelligence (AI).
